Artist Statement

‘Earthed’
New England Regional Art Museum NERAM
May 31 - June 31 2024

During 2023 I spent long periods sheltering from the extreme heat in my basement studio as the Earth experienced its hottest temperatures to date. I was inspired to paint Sitting Watching Listening during those sweltering days.

I felt compelled to create a place where I could imagine myself sitting by a quiet cool water hole, watching the light change the landscape, listening to the sounds, contemplating the beauty around me while giving thanks to all that nature provides.

This painting hopes to connect the viewer with the natural world and evoke feelings of peace, mystery and wonder.

Penelope believes ‘through strengthening our connection with nature, we will want to protect and look after this vulnerable and precious Earth’.
